Gluma & Self Etch Dentin Adhesives

By Lee Ann Brady on 05.21.15Category: Dental Materials

One of the common questions I get when teaching is whether Gluma, a combination of Glutaraldehyde and HEMA by Heraeus Kulzer can be used with self etching dentin adhesives. The answer is yes you can. Gluma provides four distinct benefits:

  • Anti-microbial effect in the dentinal tubules, lower risk of pulpitis
  • Collagen Coagulate int he dentinal tubules, reducing sensitivity
  • Re-wetting of dentin
  • Reduction of production of MMP’s, decreasing bond degredation

All of these effects still occur when combined with a SE system, and the bond strengths of the adhesive are not impacted either positively or negatively. When used with a SE system the Gluma is applied first. In the liquid form, apply it to the prep and then blot excess dry with a cotton pellet. If you are using Gluma Powergel, rinse and dry the tooth after 30 seconds. Follow with the first step of your SE dentin adhesive system, then place the restoration.

    Hi
Under composite fillings before the bonding step and after the etch , would you wash the gluma or just blot dry when applying it ?

The Gluma Power Gel is rinsed and dried and the original Gluma liquid blot dry with a cotton pellet.
