Prescription Strength Toothpaste

One of the things I am committed to is helping my patients keep their teeth, whether the recommendation is big or small. One of the most powerful conversations we have in our office with people, is about home care. My philosophy about home care is to work with people, and help them find things they can do regularly to maintain the health of the mouth. Over the years this has been more successful than telling them what I think they should do and then being disappointed at the next recall with their lack of compliance.

Most of my patients brush regularly, so if we can leverage an existing pattern of behavior, and make it a more powerful tool in their regimen, it is a win for everyone. In our office we make brushing a powerful tool, by inviting our patients to brush with Clinpro 5000. We keep a supply of the prescription strength toothpaste substitute in our office to dispense to patients. The chemistry provides them with far more fluoride then they get with an OTC version and Tri-Calcium Phosphate to encourage re-mineralization of the enamel.

My experience of working with toothpaste products we dispense has made me a believer, and I think their effectiveness comes in many ways. We are placing a product with better efficacy on their brush, and helping them to improve their oral health. I have also seen the power this one small step, an investment in their own dental health, has to engage people in the process. Many of them on their own  increase their home care regimen in response, they feel good about what they are doing, and the tube of Clinpro stands as a reminder on the bathroom counter everyday.

We recommend it to patients in active ortho, with a moderate to high caries risk, low plaque scores, at the completion of restorative care, with dry mouth and on and on. When I started bringing home tubes for every bathroom in my house, I realized their isn’t anyone who can’t benefit.

[…] I give my patients the link to this website so they can see for themselves what they are drinking. We try and give them some ideas for decreasing decay, including lowering the amount of sugar they consume, rinsing after drinking a sugary beverage if they can not brush, and brushing with a prescription toothpaste.
